MARVEL OF THE MIDDLE AGES

MARVEL OF THE MIDDLE AGES

Imposing merchant houses, magnificent patrician palaces, high towers, narrow streets, open squares… medieval architecture from the 11th to the 13th century characterizes the city’s appearance to this day.

It is easy to see why Regensburg was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006: As an ensemble, the Old Town is simply unique.

Regensburg is the best-preserved medieval city in Germany. Almost 1,000 monuments are located closely together in the city center, forming a bridge through time. You can take a walk from the past to the present exploring important periods of history. Step through the northern gate Porta Praetoria, erected 2,000 years ago by the Romans. Cross the Danube river over the stone bridge, regarded as an engineering sensation when it was built 850 years ago. Together with the Gothic “Dom St. Peter (St Peter’s Cathedral), it became the emblem of the city.

Take a look behind the doors of the “Reichssaal” (Imperial Hall) in the historic Town Hall. It dates back to the 13th century and was where the German emperors held their imperial assemblies. In the Thurn & Taxis ancestral castle, still home to this aristocratic family, you can visit the oldest parts of the former monastery from which the castle arose, the impressive State Rooms, and much more.

Regensburg’s picturesque atmosphere is enhanced by its location on no less than four rivers and the gorgeous greenery in its well-kept parks. It is home to interesting museums, quaint shops and, of course, an abundance of cafés and restaurants where Regensburg’s legendary hospitality reigns supreme.
